Does anyone know if the PS3 will upconvert older DVDs to 1080i/p? I can't find the definitive answer. MBs are full of misinformation and I can't locate the answer on sony website.
i dont believe it does any upconverting to 720p, 1080i or 1080p. you are stuck with the dvd resolution of 480 when playing back dvd movies

Do you have a link to back this up from an official source or are you just guessing?

My motto concerning the PS3 is as follows:
PS3: Only Bill Gates can afford one.

There are quite a few sources that support the general claim that the PS3 will not convert:

I don't understand how a game could "up convert" to a higher resolution if the original resolution is 480. I mean you don't get something from nothing...right? A company that writes games would not write the game in a higher resolution that nobody will see...would they?
standard dvds are made at a resolution of 480i for older tv setsl. basically they have a microprocessor that upconverts (adds) the extra lines and adjusts the frame rate of the movie to near hd quality.

All HDTV's upconvert every signal that is not input at their native resolution. Depending on the quality of the scaler in the TV, this upconverted picture can look fabulous or terrible. Upconverting DVD players attempt to do a better job then the TV scalers. The Toshiba HD-DVD player is well known for it's impecable upconversion of standard DVD's. I see no reason why, with all of its processing power, the PS3 cannot upconvert DVD's. If they don't provide that function, it's their loss.

I find it hard to believe that there might actually be an exception to the "Garbage in, Garbage out" rule... :)
Unless the DVD had some hidden encoding information. I don't see how it could end up making a lower quality movie one of higher quality...

Upconverting does not add quality. It is simply scaling to different resolutions. Scaling can make things look worse, much worse. A good scaler can make DVD's look very good on an HD display. It's not magically making a DVD into an HD-DVD but it can dramatically improve the picture quality on an HDTV.

That seems really lame for Sony not to add this feature. I didn't really want to have 2 dvd players
with my system.
