Server room

Just out of the blue this came to my mind. Does anyone here actually have a server room at home? I know someone who does he hosts many web servers and some game servers. It seems cool maybe i will consider getting something like that. $$$$ comes in handy though :p

You can do it out of your home. It is very difficult to do a good job though since many things like your connection speed, power requirements, redundancy are out the window.

Panama Red has some 15 processors running the folding at home software. Not sure if he has all of them in a server room, but he might. He'll likely never see this thread, though, given the title.

Not to mention the poor environment (dust/pet hair/etc.) and overall risks you assume such as fire or a tree falling on your power line.

colocation (which is the technical term) is a very valid business model but does, as mairving points out, has significant bandwidth, power and redundancy requirements.

Most colo's that I have seen/been involved with are set up like this:

at least 2 highspeed lines from 2 different providers with powerful bandwidth provisioning capabilities
Multiple power sources: 2 from the power company, usually from 2 seperate grid attachments + highpower generators + big battery backups (your customer in Washington could care less than you lost power in Kansas City...why aren't his servers available)
Significant physical security: each customer's set up locked in its own secure cage
off site backup storage and a disaster recovery plan
24 hour on site (or fast response) technical/it support


It used to be that anyone with a T1 could do a colo but now, companies truly understand that their electronic data is as important as (if not more so) the cash in the bank so the requirements for colo's have increased dramatically

I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of his PCs are spread out throughout his house. Some of them belong to his family members, If I remember right.
