My strategy for buying games i'm not too sure about is to wait two or three month until the price comes down by about two thirds - and then buy it.
Then I haven't wasted so much money if I don't like it.
Vampire The Masquerade fell into this category. It got good reviews, I liked the theme, but as a FPS, I wasn't really into "pointy-clicky rpg games".
However, having bought it four days ago for $8, I have been pleasantly suprised. It has excellent graphics, strong storyline, good controls, suitably spooky atmosphere, diverse enemies, and plays more like Severance or Rune than Planetscape Torment.
If you're looking for a single player game while waiting for the the next big FPS - I think it's worth a look.
