Looking for a program that'll make XP Pro run like a fresh reboot

I notice with XP Pro, if I've been doing something resource intensive like converting video or rendering animation frames, my machine just bogs down. I inevitably have to reboot in order to get it running normal again. Why is that and is there a program out there that'll fix it. I've tried various registry and system cleaners and optimizers and they just seem to make everything worse. Thanks.

Pentium 4 - 2.6
1 gig or RAM
Radeon 9600SE graphics card
WinXP Pro - SP2

Control panel, system, advanced, performance, virtual memory. Temporarily change it to NO pagefile, reboot, then run a defrag. Then set the pagefile to 3072 initial and maximum. Keep the hard drive less than 75% full and defrag it frequently. Run CCleaner frequently.

Download and install Freeram XP Pro. Do NOT set it to run at startup. If you get a bogdown, run it manually after closing all running applications.

glc I was always told to set the pagefile (initial and maximum) to 1.5x the amount of system RAM. In my case 3072 with 2GB of memory. But I see above you are recommending to set it at 3x the amount of RAM. Should I resest my pagefile? Thanks

could be whats called a memory leak from a program. What happens is after you close the program you were using it is suppose to release its handles on memory to free them up for other programs to use. Memory leaks happen when programmers get lazy or a bug in the program, and unfortunately the only way to usually fix these types of problems is a systerm reboot or a program patch or upgrade.

Might try ending task on Explorer..Its a fast way to reboot.

You cannot have a pagefile any larger than 4095, so the 3x suggestion does not apply to machines with 2gb of ram. There's all kinds of opinions on how to size your pagefile, but the thing I want is the SAME initial and maximum so it won't keep resizing and fragmenting.

If you are plagued with programs with memory leaks that don't release it back when you close them, Freeram will reclaim it. I do NOT recommend letting it run in the background - but manually using it as needed will help.

Sorry to jump in here, but i've got the same problem with my laptop. I was wondering what I should set my pagefile to? also, what I should set it too after I add my new stick of 1 gig RAM for a total of 1.5 gigs.

This program is supposed to monitor what is running in memory and free up programs that do not release themselves from memory.

as glc stated set the initial and max to 3072 or no larger then then 4095. just set it so the initial and max are the same so its not resizing itself and fragmenting.

clroberts, that's exactly what I was talking about. Please read the entire thread. Again, I do not recommend use in the background, only use as needed and close all apps before running it.

Fox, if you have 512 now, set it to no more than 1536 min and max.

I posted the link to FreeRam XP Pro. And as long as you aren't running a lot of intensive apps, it really doesn't matter if it is running in the background. I leave it running unless I am wanting to play Battlefield 2 or some other memory intensive app. Another thing is if you have another harddrive physically in the machine I would place the pagefile on that physically separate harddrive. It will speed things up.

i disabled the pagefile but now what number should i insert????? im doing thhis on a ATHL XP
then ill do it on my system

Disable the pagefile, reboot, then defrag. Then create a new pagefile.

AGAIN - for 512 ram, I recommend 1536 min and max.
