I don't know what the heck happened but customer had deleted some things using add remove and then got a blue screen about NWREDIR. Microsoft says that has to do with some netware product. No netware product on the computer.
Well, anyhowze, I tried reinstalling a win98SE upgrade over the current installation and as soon as it started up it said time remaining 134 minutes. Seems that something must be quirky here. It is still running but I wonder if anyone has any insight into why this would take so long. Pentium 233 MMX on an epox motherboard.

The timer isn't a fixed time, it is just an estimate. I have had these timers show 18000 minutes leftand then drop off really quick.
As far as the Netware, go into the Network settings on the control panel and get rid of it if that is not the client.

You can usually get rid of errors like that by removing dialup networking and all network components, rebooting, and then reinstalling what you need. You can do this in safe mode.

Well, since i could not getinto regular mode i went into safemode and there were NO network entries at all. strange, as there had been dialup networking. i installed client for netware and it put the rest there. on reboot the error was gone. i would still like to know how the error cropped up in the first place. now i have not gone back in to delete the netware stuff and ipx. will i end up with the same problem when i try to put back the client and protocol i want? well for now it is fixed and i thank you both mucho.

Add the components you want, reboot, get everything working - then you can remove what you don't want.
