View Full Version : How many standoffs?

Just wanted to be sure that I installed my motherboard correctly...

How many standoffs do motherboards typically require. My motherboard manual showed 6, so I installed 6. There were more holes but I didn't use them because they weren't metal plated. As long as I did the ones the motherboard manual showed, I'm fine, right?

I know, pretty dumb question - but I need to make sure.

Yeah, as long as the board is held in tightly, 6 is fine.

That is a dumb question I would be prone to ask. Newbuilder14, with your computer knowledge, why am I surprised you just asked that question. Too funny if you ask me.

BTW my manual says to match up all 9 holes to the mobo tray and it totally skips over the part about using stand-off screws. Thank goodness I found out before mobo arrived but still does not solve my problem:cool:

I was reading on here some poor guy mounted his board without stand-offs and fried a $100 board. He shook it off as no big deal and bought another one.

Well it just seemed funny some holes didn't have metallic rings... :) Of course I know how to install motherboards and such... :D I think each motherboard varies.

I suspect that some of those holes w/o metallic rings, are used for when they manufacture the board. Ive seen some mobos with the letters DIP beside one. My best guess is if they have to dip the board in a solution for etching, or for some other purpose, they probably use those.

I know, pretty dumb question - but I need to make sure.Use only the motherboard mounting holes that line up to the mounting holes in the motherboard mounting tray. These will always be the ones with the metal rings in them. The other holes in the motherboard (without the rings) don't line up to any mounting holes in the case mounting tray so don't worry about them.

Is this your first build?

A standard ATX mother board generally has 9 mounting holes in 3 rows of 3 while a uATX mother board has 6 mounting holes in 2 rows of 3.

Nope, it is my sixth. :)How come you have so many newbish questions about this particular system? You're practically a veteran already.

6 is too few...thats 3 at the top and 3 at the bottom....whats in the middle...?

most ATX boards I've done have 9 for full size... I supose 6 for mini-atx is enough...
