What's a good program for the non-professional for designing web pages.
I don't know anything about html, but I've got 6 years experience in desktop publishing and am quite expert in QuarkXpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

Think I can handle it?

The 3 most widely used are Front Page Express (free with IE4.x and up), Netscape Composer (also free with 4.x and up) and Arachnophilia (free, careware).
Read and download all about Arachnophilia/careware in the Web/Utilities section on my pages.

If you want a free HTML editor, then use either Arachnophilia or First Page 2000. If you are willing to pay for the editor, then you can't get better than Homesite. If you want a wysiwyg editor, then purchase Dreamweaver, but this is not the way to learn HTML programming.

If you want to learn HTML, the best place to start is <a href="http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html">Arachnophilia</a>. It has a guide on creating HTML pages in its help section.

Although it's expensive, Dreamweaver by Macromedia is a very good program. Just my .02

I use dreamweaver, u can create really good webpages quite easily. You can dload a free 30 day trial which is nice too.

LoL!
Dont use FrontPage Express, if you want to create a good website!

And if you want to have a nice and quickly loading site you MUST learn HTML and CSS. This not so hard. 2-3 days of experiments with tags and I think you be a good one.
Good luck with your first site!

I agree Aquila! However now that I'm older and lazier, I use Net Objects Fusion, which is a superb program, it lets you lay out you web design in a flow chart format and then add the data and graphics, you can change the entire site style with the click of a button. Personally I love this program, it does have it's limitations but that'a where notepad comes in.
