Not sure where to list this problem since I do not know if it is drivers or hardware causing the problem.

I have a Dell FPS2405, 24 inch, 1920x1200 monitor.

Each and every time I boot the computer up I have to go to Control Panel/ Display/Settings/Advanced and set the resolution back to 1920x1200 from 1024x768...which is the resolution the computer keeps booting into.

What might be causing this?

Thanks

Could try updating the video card drivers.

Yeah, I would update drivers for both the video card and the monitor.
That should take care of it.

I went and updated the drivers for the graphics cards and things went from bad to worse.

My computer still boots but absolutely nothing shows on the screen. I tried booting into Safe Mode...but nothing.

Even the messages you get during POST are not showing. I believe the OS is loading because the drives still sound the same as if the OS is loading and when I go to shut down by clicking the on/off mechanical button on the case, there is that delay as if the OS is closing down.

I may have loaded the wrong drivers is my best guess. The two choices I had in the Nvidia driver download page seemed rather ambiguous. One had "Go" in the name of the file. I did not choose this one. I chose the other possible one. The remaining choices were obviously wrong.

Which drivers am I supposed to have? My graphics cards are an Asus 7800 GTX

Is there a way to install the correct driver or to get to Restore while driving blind?

The video card drivers shouldn't have any affect until Windows boots up. Try booting without the HD connected to make sure POST shows. This would show a least that the video card is working.

Hmmmm...the POST was not showing before I installed the new drivers. I thought this was a function of the graphics drivers becoming corrupted. So what does it mean when POST does not show but the the XP "Welcome" page shows on the monitor?. This is how it was before I loaded the drivers from the Nvidia website. The BIOS is supposed to show the POST correct? Is the BIOS corrupt? Could this be it? Would resetting the BIOS be the next thing to try?

The few times people have had problems with no POST showing and then the windows boot screen shows means that the video card is not fully working meaning that the basic vga resolution is not working. I would say that you might have a bad video card.
Just to make sure that the monitor isn't the problem, try a different monitor.

Yes, definitely try a different monitor. Better yet, use the VGA (analog) port on the monitor instead of DVI and see if the POST screen comes up. HTH

Are you sure you are connected to the primary, not the secondary, card (of the SLI set up).

When you boot up, does the monitor light go from orange to green?

Another thought is to check the on-screen menu on the monitor for a resolution Auto-detect option that can be turned on or off.

I assume that your sig has the motherboard you are using for that system? I know you've probably been on ASUS's site, but here's the link to your system:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A8N32-SLI%20Deluxe

If your BIOS isn't up to date, I would probably flash it at this point. Looks like there's some new support for Video Cards (Of course the latest support is for the 7900 and your sig says 7800, but not knowing the age of the Bios, who knows)

These cards only have two DVI ports each..no VGA ports. I also checked to make sure that the monitor is connected to the correct DVI port for SLI...it is. I checked the monitor on my other computer, it is working fine.

This is kinda scarry!...I am running out of things to try.

Should I go ahead and buy a cheap graphics card to try? Will it work with the possibly corrupt drivers still installed?

It appears that the next thing to try is to flash the BIOS.

Could get a cheap PCI card, at least should be able to have video with it. If it does work, boot into Safe Mode, then you don't need to worry about the installed drivers.

Hey Dave,

I'd try a cheap videcard first --- just something simple you can pickup locally with a normal VGA port. I wouldn't go as far as flashing the bios yet, that just adds another variable into the equation at this point. HTH

Definitely try new video card

That's also why I keep the old video cards laying around. I even have a really old PCI card that I can use just for diagnostics.
