I am wanting to install Mandrake 8.0 on my old computer in dual boot with ME. I tried to boot from the CDROM after changing the boot sequence in bios and it says failure reading drive. I have a 13.6 gig hard drive with ME on a 6+ gig partition and the other 6+ is for use with Linux. I have even tried to make a floppy to boot from and my machines can't find Rawwrite or Rawrite whichever way you spell it as per the Mandrake instructions. How can I start the install and get around these problems? I burned the disks with Nero, INST and EXT, from my hard drive after downloading them from one of the download sites. What can I use to open the files on the disks to view what is on them or is there a way in windows?

Nero has some problems if you dont get the options right (ISO mode1 etc etc)
I'd always suggest using fireburner .. its shareware but it does the trick.

To use rawrite doubleclick on E:\dosutils\rawritewin.exe
then for the image file go to: E:\Images\cdrom.img
E: being your CDROM drive.

But you'd be better off making yourself a bootable CD. Make sure its an ISO9660.

Thanks Statica, maybe I burned it wrong as I just wrote it to the disk as it was. I now have the instructions for burning it with Nero and I'll try again. I downloaded the burner you had the link to but it tells me a dll is missing to install it. Will post back on progress.

Well, here's the deal. I got two good disks now but it freezes during the install. I even got rid of ME and installed it alone. It first froze up early while preparing the hard drive and I thought it was the overclock doing it so I backed it down to the stock 750 from 900. It got almost to the end, about 96 or 97% and locked again. I'll try again tomorrow.

Do you know at exactly what part it hung up? Did the GUI installer begin or was it prior to it? Try typing 'text' during the install option screen. Good luck

I don't know where it hung but the countdown said there were 40 seconds left to complete the install after it had been installing for about 20 minutes. I was installing everything except the foreign language stuff. I'm gonna try again later this morning.

Mandrake 8 is still pretty flaky on custom installs, try the standard/default installation the first time around if possible.

I did the standard install and it worked I'm not sure which package it installed though. Some things on it seem to run really slow when trying to configure things. It even seems to lockup on some stuff. I've still got to figure out what needs to be configured to make stuff work.
It boots to the KDE desktop, is that what I want as I know it is capable of others?

This is my first reply from the Linux machine. I don't understand why the browser is so slow. It seems to take forever to bring up the next window each time something is selected. Always says it is resolving something. How may I speed it up? I'm browsing with the Mozilla browser which seems to jump over to Netscape to do anything. I know it uses the Netscape engine but it spends a lot of time changing into Netscape to do stuff.
