I Tune's upgrades

I'm currently using I Tunes 6 and every now and again the program asks me if I'd like to upgrade, and I wonder if what is available past 6.0.4.2 is worth the effort?
I must say, I Tunes in general is a fantastic program of which I use on my PC regularly. I sincerely respect all those that use this forum in helping others for their opinions, as several of you have helped me in the past, and it's truly appreciated!

Any help on whether I'd see positive changes with an I Tunes upgrade?

Rule 1 for iTunes upgrades.
Read up on them over at the iTunes forum : http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=149

They do indeed bring positive changes but upgrades also bring trouble so let someone else do the "early adopter" bit.
When in doubt do not hit upgrade.
Copy your music to some place safe, you should have it all backed up anyway, and then do a complete uninstall and reinstall of iTunes.
In your case you're far enough behind the curve that I would recommend that you do that.
So uninstall iTunes, and then go into Programs on the C drive and make sure you get all the folders, that goes for Quicktime as well.
Follow that up with the registry cleaner of your choice, I use regclean, but anyone good one you're familiar with will do.
Then download to disk the stand alone version of Quicktime and the most recent iTunes version.
Install Quicktime first and make sure it's running, go find a movie trailer.
Then install iTunes.
Make sure your security software recognizes that the new version has internet permission or iTunes won't be able to open at all.
Enjoy!
Download a few free television shows while you're trying out the new version.

Great advice from pam123.

When iTunes 7.0 came out I did something that I almost never do...I jumped on the upgrade right away, in fact the first day it was released. That was a mistake and I soon learned that the problems I was having was effecting most people as well. The music would pop and hiss...it just sounded awful. After about 2 weeks Apple released another update and all was well. 7.0.2 is now the latest version and for me it's the best ever. There are some neat features that I think you will like. I also have not heard of any wide spread problems with the current version.

I believe if you decide to upgrade you will like it.

i have the lastest version of itunes and it still has some bugs like when im in other programs it does skip or crackle every once in a while but its really up to you if u want the new features that bad

You don't really have a choice if you want to use the iTunes store or a new iPod.
If you don't upgrade they won't work for you.

Hmmm, I guess I'm left with a little bit more of a sour taste when it comes to iTunes upgrades. Last time my library path got messed up, iTunes couldn't restore the original path, forced me to upgrade 7.01 and decided to erase my iPod in the process. Pretty cool software eh? I was using 6.x before that and it was working just fine. To me iTunes has always one of those things that if it works, don't break it -- that is unless of course you are longing for the new features that come with upgrades.

Perhaps I should ask then....what "options" are different from my version 6X to the newest of version 7X?
My current I Tunes is working perfectly, so I wonder if upgrading would be worthwhile? It sounds like more trouble than it's worth...but again, that would depend on what "more" 7X has to it than what I currently have.

I think itunes 7 is a big scheme to make my upgrade my computer. Ever since I installed it I don't have enough power to render videos and my mouse at the same time. This is not only HD movies, but tiny movies that have resolutions of like 320x240. As long as my mouse resides in the other monitor from itunes, videos play fine, but with the mouse the framerate drops to a slideshow. I have an AMD AthlonX2 4600+, 2 gigs of DDR-800, and an ATI X1900XT with 512MB of video memory. What more is apple looking for? Every other program I have plays every video I throw at it smoothly, including 1080p h.264 files. I'm pretty satisfied with that, but I dream of someday having a system powerful enough to run itunes smoothly. ;)

What is it you're trying to do with the video?
Spread it over two monitors?
Treat it as streaming?
iTunes does run video smoothly.

I subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory. If you have a second computer to play with, try the new version on that before deciding to jump in with your main machine. An iTunes upgrade is not something I'd trust to a system restore to undo in case it goes sour, the only way I'd do it blind is if you take a full image of your hard drive.

The only reason to upgrade is to support newer iPod's, other than that you get a few new features that I'm sure you can live without.
