Hi,

I have just a couple questions about free isps. With my current isp I don't get very good downloads 4-5k. Can you get higher rates with free isps? How about during gaming---pings? I was thinking of trying one out as back up to my current one. How much info do you give out? What are some good ones? Thanks in Advance!

ive used freewwweb for a while. Let me say that the free isp's get annoying after a while - cannot login, login name incorrect... the list goes on - but all the errors mean is that u cannot connect to theyr server. - i dont think u will get much better speeds with a freeisp cause so many people use em and therefore the server gets full..

Do urself a favor and get cable - i did. It flies at a mornin avg about 100-200kb/s, miday avg of bout 50-60kb/s, and a nightly avg of bout 60-220kb/s. Not bad at all http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for the replies...I can't find any that have access numbers for my area though. Does anybody know of any good ones that have 1-800 access numbers? Thanks again.

I have freewwweb and aol. With aol I sign on every time at 53333 and occasionaly at 57200 but with freewwweb I can only sign on at 28800 and the fastest has been 31200. That is at all different times of the day and night. My son has freewwweb and he gets on at 47 to 49 something consistently. I have e-mailed them and have recieved no reply so it seems there e-mail support is nonexistent. of course you could pay $15.00 for phone support Den

Hey Floppy,
Try www.worldspy.com (http://www.worldspy.com)

I have a friend using it and likes it. I've heard there is no ad banner also.

Overall, I've heard good things about worldspy.

UPDATE ON FREE ISP.

I just downloaded the "new" version of worldspy. It now downloads in 5 minutes with a 56k modem. It appears you are only downloading a dialer which will then launch your browser, eg., IE, Netscape, etc.

Well, I downloaded it and it installed and works fine. I may just keep it as a second isp. Best of all, NO AD BANNER!

In my country not many ISPs to choose.
Studying modems , 5k download speed for 56k modems isn't bad..The best results will be achieved if user's modem and isp's use the same chipst.

Thanks all, but does anybody know of one that has 1800 access numbers? I can't find any with access numbers in my area? Thanks.

Hey Floppyman, I am using Bluelight to send this, they have 4 numbers in 319 area code and 2 in 515 area code. You can pick up a free cd at any Kmart store. Try this link for the numbers. http://www.bluelight.com/isp/areacode_lookup.shtml

Well the reason I'm asking is that they don't have any local nr's for me...maybe the area code...but not a local town nr....so I'd still be dialing long distance...unless there is a 800 nr.

I think it is a bit much to ask an isp to give you free service and pay for your phone call too. I don't know of any.

Best bet: go to alladvantage.com at the link below. You can make $12.50 per month which will almost pay for an ISP that charges. I make about $27.00 per month.

I've tried several of them Floppy and the best by far is World Spy. Some others I tried were Alta Vista, Net Zero and one other that I can't remember. These others all have banner ads and Alta Vista's is about the only one that lets you kinda move the banner out of the way. The downloads were pretty slow, I guess because they are crowded.

Thanks again fellows, I think I'll stick with mine for now...can't find any access numbers for my small town anyway..plus if they're crowded it's not really worth it. Now...if I just had broadband..... http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/smile.gif

I use Freelane by Excite. There is an ad banner, but I use it through a network server so the "client" pcs have no banner. I also must use "Keep It Alive" to defeat the "no activity" disconnects. The access is good and fast however.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a 100% free ISP. You are going to have to give up something or tolerate something. I read the article Sarge referred to. A lot of it is technical and deals with Java, etc, and I don't understand a lot of it. I'm not a computer tech. I did download worldspy and I use it as a backup ISP. It seems to work as well as the ISP that I pay $20 a month for. It seems to be just as fast. I use a 233mmx with a Zoom winmodem most of the time. My advice is to try it and if you don't like it, dump it and try another one.

I use Freewwweb since October'99.
It works much better than Mindspring I had before I canceled and started using Freewwweb. It has no banner. Has minuses- tech support is non-existant. I e-mailed a couple a times, got responses that made me laugh.
In evening hours[7-11p.m.] it works so slow, sometimes looks like vit froze. However, all other times it usually flies.

I see no reason to pay for 56K connection unless it's local[~$10]. I would NOT pay $20 for national ISP.

Also, I have tried Address.com, it has a banner, but works not bad in my area. I actually used address.com a very few times, because Freewwweb works not that bad for me.
What I like about Freewwweb- nothing to download, it takes a minute or 2 to setup connection.

Once you download and install Worldspy and use their dialer to set up your account, you can just set up the DUN manually and get around the Vivilink crap.

Login: nvnet.yourusername@microportal.com

Works great till they find a way to block this.

Good news, but how do you get the primary/secondary DNS #'s?

glc

Server assigned works just fine. In fact, that works fine for 90% of the ISP's out there these days.

Thanks. I got it, but when trying to log on 1st time, it says "can't authenticate". I'll fool with it later on.

You have to use the software the first time to get the account fully established.
