Here's the checklist I stand by. It has served me well on many jobs. If you get one or two slipping the net, then you are unfortunate, and you need to get tough.

1. Install AVG
2. Install ZoneAlarm
3. Install and update Spybot Search and Destroy
4. Turn OFF “System Restore”, this applies only to Windows ME and Windows XP:

Windows XP

1. Right click on the “My Computer” icon on the Windows desktop.
2. Click “Properties”.
3. Click on the “System Restore”.
4. Place a tick in “Turn off System Restore on all Drives”.
5. Click OK.
6. Close and RESTART system.

OR

Windows ME
1. Right click on the “My Computer” icon on the Windows desktop.
2. Click “Properties”.
3. Click on “Performance”.
4. Click “File system”.
5. Click “Troubleshooting”.
6. Check “Disable system restore”.
7. Click on OK.
8. Close and RESTART system.

5. Start into SAFE MODE
6. Run CCleaner
7. Run AVG Scan
8. Run Stinger Scan
9. Run TROJAN HUNTER Scan
10. Run Spybot Scan
11. Run Adaware Scan
12. Run CWShredder Scan
13. Run VX2 Cleaner Scan
14. Reboot into Normal Mode
15. Get online and Run - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
16. Update Windows – IE>Tools>Windows Update - This will take you to the Microsoft Windows Update page where you need to follow the on screen prompts, starting with “EXPRESS INSTALL”. Install ALL “Critical Updates” and “Service Packs”.
17. Reboot in Normal Mode.
18. Turn System Restore back ON.
19. Run HJT if Required.

Is it really that complicated to stay free from malware?

I never had a problem with Windows XP System Restore, as a matter of fact it has save me a couple of times. I run AVG and use the default firewall that Windows XP provides to protect my computers, I use Microsoft Defender and occasionally run Spybot : Search & Destroy to get rid of my spyware. As of today for the last year (Knocking on wood as I type this ) I've had 0 infections of any kind of virus on my computers (3 runnning 24/7 and hooked up to the internet), but I have gotten rid of some spyware from time to time. I've read and heard from security experts in the computer field that a person will never be 100% free of spyware, the best they can do is control it and keep it manageable. Some even went on to say that even a small fraction of spyware is good for a computer (I personally disagree with this, but everyone is entitled to their opinion). Just my .02 cents and I agree with TimPoet.

most of the time, it is the kind of websites you visit that makes the difference.
stay away from porn and warez will save people alot of headaches.
that said,
people with medium to advance knowledge of computers should SERIOUSLY considering using some OS other than windows for INTERNET.
I DO my Internet banking/shopping through my FREEBSD machine, if anyone wanted to know.

Why do you turn off System Restore, alexcraw?

BTW, aside from ZoneAlarm (I use the SP2 firewall), that matches my list precisely. I also run Adaware frequently. I'm convinced it reduces spam.

Never been nailed. Of course now that I've opened my fat mouth....

because viruses can be put or lay dormant in there so even though you catch and remove them, if you ever did a restore, you have brought the viruses back onto your computer.

i to disable the system restore.

I use AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, and Spywareblaster.

Update them at least once a week. I get a few dings here and again, but have had no real problems.

Spyware blaster is a program that blocks it from loading. You can find a heap of stuff at Majorgeeks.com
