Hello everyone, I am trying to prepare to setup a dualboot sys. I hav win98. Partitioned 20GB in half. Win98 is running on half the hdd. Now I bought a bk no sale on 'How to use Linux' which includes Caldera OpenLinux v1.3 software. What is the opinion of u gurus on installing OpenLinux v1.3 to learn? And will this ver of Linux work alright in a dual bootup setting alongside win98? How do I setup and use the part of the hdd I hav set aside to learn about unix through linux and such? My system is madeup of a Mobo SY-6BA+IV, PII 350MHz,Maxtor Hdd 20GB ATA66 7200RPM, IOMagic CDRom 42X, IOMagic Video TNT2 32MB AGP Graphics Accelerator, CreativeLab Modem Blaster Flash 56 ISA,Ensonique DCS817 PCI Sound Crd, Plex CDRW 8/4/32. Any suggestions will be greatly apprecited.
Thank you all

I have that same book and cd.I installed it on a 486DX50 with 20MB of ram and a
530 MB hdd.I tried installing a "minimal X system"but it took soooo looong to for x to load up I just used it in shell-mode to learn the commands and stuff. With your newer equipment you'll probably have better luck. Not sure about that SB modem and support for your burner may not exist on that kernel. But you can give it a whirl. Im sure your system will run one of the newer versions of Linux.Good luck!

It is encouraging that u hav the same bk and loaded it. I fnd out today that the plextor is supported by Linux. I've been up all nite b/c I reformatted my hdd w/o support for lrg disk and I cld not restore frm the backup cd. Backup kept telling me that I had to register w/it my backup and right now I have a genric cdrom driver frm MSN on it. I have lgical drvs upto F G=cdrom and H=cdrw.
But I have about 7.5 for Linux and I want to see if I might be able to use wordperfect 8 suite w/ it? I am sure that this version comes w/more programs than I will know what to do with. Like yourself I just want it for the learning experience, its fun for me. Thanks for your input. Did you install Lilo for the dual bootsetup? How does that work?

When I installed it(Caldera 1.3)there was no other operating system.Linux had the whole 530 MB hdd to itself.Hence,I may not be of much help with the dual-booting aspect of it.But every other time I have installed Linux,be it a multi-boot setup or a stand-alone installation,it automatically installs either LiLo or grub(another boot-loader).
As for WordPerfect 8:this wont run in Linux unless it's the Linux version. You can run a windows emulator like wine or VMWare but Linux comes with StarOffice and depending on when it came out, there is abiword,a nice little word processor.
Currently,I am running Mandrake 7.1 and SuSE 7.2.HTH
