My ultimate goal is to build a VIDEO EDITING SYSTEM.

I’ve been trying to get a straight answer out of several websites for weeks about this system without any luck. Then a friend pointed me to PCMech because he had received some pretty good advice here in the past.

My main concern right now it compatablity. I’d hate to buy a part for a Porche only to find out later that the part only fits Yugo’s.

ITEMS I ALREADY HAVE
2 – 21 inch Digital Flat Monitors
1 – 5.1 Surround sound set of speakers (3x 1/8’’ jack)

ITEMS I’D LIKE TO HAVE
4 – 200gb HD’s (Dual Drive Raid / Redundant)
1 – Firewire 800 card
2 – DVD-RW drives
1 – CD Rom Drive
1 – Floppy Drive (it looks like some of the items have 3.5’’ Drivers)
4 – USB 2
1 – Front IEEE connection.

That being said.... ARE THESE ITEMS COMPATABLE?

Currently = $1600.00

Mobo: If not needing Sli(2 video cards/not needed in video editing) go with the Asus P5b Deluxe, $2 more.
PSU: Get one from Silverstone/Antec/Corsair not sure of AcBel.
Ram: Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800
HD: Go with a Seagate 7200.10/they perform a bit better than regular SATA drives

Agree with flanzig, especially on the motherboard, nForce 4 + Intel is just not worth it - instability, instability.

Acbel Polytech is actually pretty good. Im not to familiar with their lower end units, but their high end ones are actually some of the best in the market.

Spend your money on something else other than a gamer's video card. A Radeon X1300 will do what you need.

If you are going to shoot/edit Hi definition video make sure to get a true 256meg card & not one of those turbo cache models (like some 7300 512meg cards) as some editing programs have problems with those type of cards. For instance Pinnacle Studio 10.5 requires a 256meg card to work with Hi Definition Video, there may be other programs that have similar requirements.

Good point - but I do recommend the X1xxx series cards, the AVIVO may be a benefit. If you can't find a true 256mb X1300, step up to a X1600.

A thought - have you considered a RAID 5 array instead of a 0+1?

Just a note that RAID is Not mandatory for editing. Size will become very important very quick unless you plan to do a lot of shuffling of files to disk or tape. Editing and rendering is still mostly CPU intensive. Using this box for example: I'm running a 4800+ X2 and even with programs like TMPGEnc which utilizes both CPUs, the hard drive light is not even close to doing much more than just blinking. And that is even on slower ATA drives.

I'm looking at it from the redundancy standpoint - data protection in case of a drive failure. That's what RAID 5 is best at, without losing performance or eating up excessive drive space.
