Password Reset Help

I want to access old username on winXP Pro (under domain) , but the password doesn’t work. Can somebody help me how to reset the password . I tried through User Accounts but I can’t to reset password from there.

if its a domain account, you have to change the password in active directory on the server.

I changed password for domain , but still I'm not able to log in in windows account

Log into the local machine, not the domain, with an administrative account. Then you can change that user's password in local users and groups.

is this computer on the domain? meaning when you go to login with the classic login box, is there and option for "Log on to" your choices will be either the domain, or that local machine.
if your computer is not part of the domain, then this log on to box will not be there.

what error are you getting? does it say the account is locked out?
login to the local machine using an account with administrative priveleges, and go to control panel, user accounts, advanced tab, manage passwords, and delete the one that might be in there for that particular user account. then logout and try logging back in.

Make sure that if you are logging in to the domain that you logging into the domain, and not the local pc. under the password section there is a drop down section where you select the domain or local computer. if you cant' see that, select the options button to display it.


EDIT: if you dont have a screen like this when logging in then your pc is not part of a domain and you need to use a local account on that computer.

Yea I'm under domain and I have choice to choose domain name.

try logging in with a different domain account on that machine.
also try logging in with the problematic domain account on another machine.
make sure cap locks is off as passwords are case sensitive
is this user allowed to login to this machine. go into Active Directory under his account and make sure there are no computer login restrictions.

post back with the results.

There is no data under 'manage passwords' option. There is one admin user account on local machine and two other user accounts under domain. I'm having problems only with onw of those user accounts under domain. When I try to log in I'm geting "The system can't log you in........"

delete the one account you are having trouble with from the manage passwords section.

But then I won’t be able to access its content. I have some old files here which I don’t want to be lost. Is there any way how I can reset the password?

technically you can't access them now anyway with that user account since you cant even login, are these files encrypted?

what are the file permissions set at on those files you dont want to lose? only this user has access? do you have the adminstrators group set to full access on these files?

did you try this?

I 'm sure they are not encrypted, or some security level is set up... I can't have access and from different machine eater

What OS are you running? 2000, XP pro?

go to a file or the folder where all these documents reside and right click and choose sharing and security? and click on the security tab? and tell me which users or groups have access and what there permission level is (read, modify,full)


EDIT: Manage password section is only for storing passwords on network resources or for other computers or .net passports. it will NOT DELETE the SID on the account which is used for authentication.

I have Win XP pro. All files under this user have Full Control

Log in as the domain admin and take ownership of those folders/files.

is there other groups or users that have access to these files in the security tab? what are there permissions set at?

if not i would recommend adding the adminstrators group and giving them full access
