Hey experts!
I just got a new 160GB Western Digital hard drive, divided it into 2 equally sized partitions (C and D) which ended up in about 74.5GB each formatted and installed a windows xp pro on partition C. Everything looks fine except when I click on my D partition in my computer it shows that it has free space of about 53.3GB. I have not installed anything yet. Why is it missing 20GB?
Thanks for help.

What operating system are you running and what disk format did you use (FAT32 or NTFS?)

The actual capacity will be 149GB, so you will be losing 11GB there.

As for the other 9GB...go to the control panel > administrative tools > computer management > under "storage", go to "disk management"
Do you see any unpartitioned space on the secondary drive? If so, go ahead and delete the 2nd partition (if you have no data on it), and create a new partition to use up all the remaining space.

I don't see any unpartitioned space in there. Again I have 74.5GB on my C partition and 74.5GB on my D partition so I know that it's losing 11GB already (since 160GB-(2x74.5GB)=11GB) but the problem is it shows only 53GB free space on my D partition where it should be 74.5GB.
I know strange problem :) Any other ideas what I can check?
thanks again
Is it actually showing 20gb USED space?

Yes
Unhide the hidden, system, and protected system files and see what's in there.
