VPN Connection via Linksys Router

Hello Everyone,

I just set up a wireless network at my house, but have encountered an annoying problem. My mum sometimes works from home and uses a VPN to do so. Her IT department have given her a Linksys BEFSX41 ver. 2 Router to connect through, this has now been replaced by a Wifi capable router.

She cannot connect to her work VPN since I have changed the router. Does this router have some special hardware to allow her access to the VPN? I have looked at the config. for it and I can't see anything that is obviously different from a standard router.

Just wondering where I can go with this, because I want to use wireless without it getting unplugged for her to do her work. Is it possible to connect the work router to a port on the wireless router and use it that way or will this cause implications of any sort?

The VPN probably identifies the connection by the MAC address of the supplied router.

So you think I could simply use the "Clone MAC" feature of the new router?

I have done some reading and it looks like the Linksys router has some special features that allow it to connect to a VPN...!?

Most routers have a selection to enable VPN passthrough. You'll need to know what protocol they use (probably PPTP) and enable it.

Some routers don't allow it, but you can open a port to allow the traffic. Her IT department would have to provide the port number.

What model did you get to replace the Linksys?

I looked in my Linksys router and there is a sub page for VPN settings found under the main heading for security settings. I use VPN also and have all of the vpn settings enabled on my Linksys router's VPN settings page. That is the first place you should check because if those are not enabled then for sure you are not going to get VPN connectivity.
