View Full Version : Westell Modem 2000
My parents got HSI for x-mas and they received a westell wirespeed 2000 modem for there DSL. my question is how do i login to change this to bridge mode so i can add a wireless router for them? what is the default ip address for the modem? i read the user guide from westell's site and it stated that if you are adding a router to look at the router manual for proper configuration. i was under the impression that all dsl modems had to be put into bridged mode to add a router, or does this westell modem allow the wan ip to pass through to the router without configuring the westell modem, to me that doesnt seem correct?
this modem only has a power jack, a rj-11 line jack and the rj-45 ethernet jack on the back. there is no switch/router built into this westell modem. i thought the ip address was 192.168.1.254 to login to the modem and configure it but thats not working?
the service is supposed to be hooked up tomorrow.

You will have to bridge the modem.
Hook a machine up directly to the modem and run an IPCONFIG. Usually the gateway address is how you log in--by typing that into a browser window. Check the manual, there should be a default password in there like "admin" or "password"...
Try 192.168.0.1
Then you can bridge it. You'll lose internet until you configure the router with the PPPOE (or whatever protocol) information.
tried that, its not working, i get a limited or no connectivity when i connect directly to modem
now that i think about it, ill do a master reset on it and see if that takes care of the problem.
EDIT: there is no reset button on the back of this westell modem.

I did see in the manual to wait for the service to be hooked up...
How old is this modem? I found the manual by googling it, but I can't find that modem on Westell's website...If it's very old, you'll have to command line program it through hyperterminal, which is not so much fun.
this modem is discontinued according to the westell.com website.
no go on the 192.168.0.1
set a static ip on the same network id and still cant connect.
ill just wait for now till tomorrow to get it hooked up.
what is the latest westell modem that is good, probably want to bring this in and swap it out.

I've never used any Westell products. Generally, though, with DSL, you have look on the provider's website and choose from modems that are compatible with their services. If, however, you're just bridging it and using a router to handle the PPPOE connection, any modem will work.
So I'd start with the manufacturer's web page. You DONT want to command line program a modem. That is no fun at all. I used to have to do that with a Cisco 678.
got it hooked up.
the ISP has the system setup where the modem doesnt require you set it up in bridged mode. even though its DSL, all i have to do is leave the router set to dhcp and it acquired the wan ip address.
then when you open IE or firefox it asks you to enter the username and password.
everything appears to be working
