View Full Version : Pop-Ups keep pop-ing UP!

For some reazon , my Laptop and PC are constantly poping up trash. I have my Pop -Ups Block (IE7) setting to HIGH. But it won't help. I have my laptop and PC scanned for spyware and any vicious software, everything negative. I have SystemSuite 6 and Windows Defender. I did Install or Remove but did not find anything that tells me about a maliciousware installed. How can I stop this trash for good or at least for few months. This is why I hate people using my machines , i can't parental control them. thanks.

Try installing the Google Toolbar and see if the blocker in it works any better.

Try using a modified HOSTS file. (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)

Might wanna try IE Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) too.

Try switching to Firefox and stop using IE. Firefox is quite effective at blocking popups. There is a setting for 'block popups'. Since it also does not respond to Activex commands a lot of other nasty activity is prevented also.
Highly recommend Firefox.

Pat, that doesn't fix IE. This thread is about fixing IE.

Yes, I've been using the host file route for a couple years now. No pop ups or ads, pages load tons faster. The only problem I've had with it was when I had to chat with my web hosting company - their 3rd party chat service had some servers listed on the pre-populated HOSTS file I downloaded. No biggie once I deleted the entries.

If you have a sudden onslaught of popups after letting someone use your computers you probably have an adware trojan that the scanners you use are unable to find. That stuff has gotten pretty sophistcated lately.

I would suggest starting out by running your scanners in safe mode. Then install a more aggressive scanner: AVG Anti-Spyware (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5)

Update it, set it to quarantine and then run it in safe mode also. Before running it clean out your temp and temporary internet files. Then post or attach the log here.

Then try an online scan using IE at Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/) Save and post the log it makes as well.
