model: KVR800D2N5/512 has 1.8v and cas5 and is confirmed by ASUS P5B's QVL. I'm just getting enough to get the rig up and running. I'll grab another stick when my wallet gets abit thicker.

I'm not sure if the P5B board will work with IDE, so I picked this SATA burner.

Already have a new ATX case.

That's $645.77 to my door. Thoughts??

Fine, but on a budget that memory is unreasonable - get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145569 - don't worry about compatibility that RAM works fine in my and many others' systems.

Also switch to a retail Lite-On DVD burner. SATA is good but IDE works just fine.

GPU: eVGA 256-P2-N541-T2 GeForce 7600GS 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16

I'd kick in another $20 for the evga 7600 gt, if you're going to be gaming.

Edit:
Well, if he's only getting 512 Mg of RAM then perhaps he's not gaming....

AND if you are going to go that far you may as well get this one: http://www.sureproxy.com/nph-index.cgi/111110A/http/www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130017

Honestly, the performance isn't too far apart, you COULD just wait for DX10 to flood the markets. It isn't like 128-bit vs 256-bit here.

See if you can afford a 1gb dual channel ram kit. The Corsair VS 667 will work fine. The Samsung SATA drive will be fine. Save 20 bucks with this video card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133192

With that savings I think you may be able to do the 1gb ram now. The ram kit is 35 bucks more than that single Kingston.

newbuilder, I would definitely go with an IDE op drive to save money but I wasn't sure if the
P5B board accepts IDE. Your saying it does?

Timpoet, glc, I'm just looking for a vid card to do light gaming until I can afford something nice, like the DX10 stuff. Will look into your recommendations, thanks!

All, as far as memory goes, I was sticking to the ASUS recomended stuff on thier website, so do I look at DDR2 800 or 667? Whats the difference? And just make sure it's 1.8v and CAS 5, right? What about the timings? (5-5-5-15??) Also, Corsair, Crucial and Kingston are the best RAM, right? I'm willing to bone up alittle extra dough for some decent RAM

The P5B has only one IDE channel, which realistically means IDE opticals OR Hard drives - not both. Since you're going for a SATA hard drive (as anyone should be by now), you're good to get IDE opticals. I'd go for a Lite-on DVD-RW, as I've had a few poor quality Samsung drives.

We've suggested Core 2 Duo system builders buy the Corsair Value Select DDR2-667 RAM, and haven't had any reports of problems. The number relates to the frequency of the RAM, and 667 is a fine match for your processor. Definitely do your best to get at least 1 GB, if you're doing any game. XP will quickly eat up 512MB, and undoubtedly Vista will want more.

Thanks Freak! Newegg lists 2 different kind of 667 ram, 5300 and 5400. Which one do I look at?

Looks good to me! Don't forget an operating system.

EDIT: Just noticed you picked a CD Burner - DVD burners are just a few dollars more, and are just about standard now:

I was checking out other possible hard drive choices and found the 160GB version of that drive is actually $4 cheaper.

Cool. Thanks guys. I did add the DVD write drive. I'm going to order everything but the mobo and cpu right now, in hopes that I may free up some funds for a 6600 c2d or one of the nicer P5B boards next payday.

Thanks everyone!!

I agree with Blue, definitely save a few bucks and get MORE hard drive space. :) I have that very drive and it is fast and quiet for me.
