New Build Dying

After assembling my computer I was able to start it up. Feeling good I waited until the next morning to load the software, but found it dead. The only response I was able to get was, after disconnecting power for 10 or so seconds, the fans spooling up for about 5 second before shutting down.

I replaced the motherboard thinking it was the culpret. This time I got windows installed before the same problem happened. I got another motherboard thinking that the previous one was crap. This one worked great for a week. Now I have come home to find that once again, it is dead. Same symptoms. I guess its not the motherboard.

what i have tried:

I have tried putting an old power supply... nothing

I tried some old RAM... nothing

I suspect that the power suply may be damaging something.

Yeah, we need to see your system specs to see if there are any suspect parts that may have died prematurely.

Per the above instructions, I have taken it all apart and connected the basics outside the case. It seems to be running fine. Can I eliminate the MB, PS, and RAM as suspects?


System Specs:

Motherboard: ECS RS482-M754 w/ ATI Radeon Xpress 200 embedded
Processor: AMD Sempron socket 754 3000+
RAM: Corsair Value Select 512MB
PS: Rosewill RD 400-2DB 400W
HD: Western Digital WD1600JS 180GB
Case: CoolerMaster...

If it runs fine outside of the case but not inside of the case then double check ALL of your standoffs and make sure they are in the exact locations for the motherboard standoff holes.

Remount the board in the case with only the bare essentials again, that means no USB headers, etc.

Did you install the brass standoffs in the case that lift the motherboard slightly above the case to prevent electrical conduction? Make sure they only line up with the motherboard holes. :)

of all things I think that my power switch is faulty. Everything runs great without the switch conected, but with it connected I get the same problem.

Try connecting the reset button lead to the power button connector and use the reset button to turn it on - this will tell you if the power button is bad or not.
