Problems with computer

I'm not able to get any video on the computer my dad and I just put together. It's a Core 2 Duo e6600, ECS P965T-A, Sapphire Radeon X1900, and A-DATA 1gb (512x2) dual channel memory kit. When I turn the computer on, there is no video. Since my speaker is an old one, it only has 2 pins and isn't compatible with the motherboard. We can turn the computer on using the power button, but it won't turn back off using the button. The current settings are just motherboard, psu, ram, processor, video card, fans, and only the power button's switch is set on.

Can anybody help?

1. We need all of your motherboard specifications.

2. Do this first: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 Out of the case. If this doesn't work I'd rule out the motherboard, RAM, or power supply (not in any specific order).

3. You can use that case speaker, but put the + connector on the pin pinboard spot labeled + and the - connector on the farthest pin from the + pin (out of the four speaker pins on the pinboard). Confusing enough?

4. ECS motherboards are substandard.

5. We still need your full computer specifications, specifically your power supply make and model.

The psu is an Ultra X-Finity 500 Watt.

I tried what they said in that thread and the computer turned on, but still without any video. We tried shorting it again to turn it off and it still wouldn't turn off. I'm starting to suspect the motherboard greatly now. We took out the processor and it wasn't burnt. Maybe the mobo was DOA?

Ultra power supplies are junk, get something reputable from the "good list" in the General Hardware forum.

Try a new motherboard and power supply.

What makes Ultra power supplies junk?

Their constant rate of failure for starters, and the fact that they are made of poor quality components and by poor quality manufacturers. That's the reason they cost about $20.

Many people have had problems with them, and a low quality power supply can damage your system if it is defective.

I think PCMech wrote a review on them but I couldn't find it.

Now there are some Ultra units that are barely decent, but I don't believe the X-Finity is one of them.

Would the damage be done already? And how can I tell if it has damaged my system?

You really wouldn't be able to if it fried it... I think you have a bad motherboard as well, so do you think you can RMA it to Newegg or wherever you bought it for an Asus P5B?

While you are at it, I'd suggest you returned the power supply as well for something from Antec, Fortron Source, Enermax, Seasonic, etc.

Edit: Honestly, you just can't return components that fast in my opinion... are you sure you did everything in the thread I gave you, especially trying one stick of memory only?

Would anything have a burnt smell to it, due to the frying?

Hopefully you have seen my edit above. No problem, I'm here to try to make people's new builds come together successfully like all of mine have (all 7 I believe). Of course, I've had a bad motherboard once, but Asus quickly sent me a new one.

And yes, you should be able to smell and/or see burn spots.

Does the video card fan spin and is the extra power connector attached to it?

Yes, the 3d card's fans come on, as does a little light on it that I'm assuming shows it's getting power. When we tried the thing you posted about doing the computer outside of the case, we used only one ram stick.

The motherboard is dual channel. One stick will not work, period. You need two identical chips.

Wrong - it WILL run with only one stick. You need 2 for dual channel mode but it will run single channel.
