I helped my friend pick out parts for his computer, and almost feel bad now that he can't get his 2.0 usb ports to work. They seem to be working at usb 1.0 rates. The motherboard definitely has usb 2.0, and there are no issues with it when looking around.
Please, would someone be nice enough to post a link to where I can get a driver for 2.0 usb or fix the problem otherwise? He is a professional digital photographer and relies on his computer quite heavily so this is pretty urgent.
thanks for any help

Most motherboards have both 1.1 and 2.0 ports, and sometimes a switch in the BIOS to set the speeds. Double check the manual to make sure he is using the right ports for 2.0 speeds, and that the BIOS is set correctly.

well the right ports are definitely being used.
Is there any particular setting in the bios that may seem tricky when trying to activate the 2.0 speeds? What would it be labeled as in the bios?
thanks for the fast response
What version of Windows, with what service pack level?
Full system specs, please.

The computer currently has sp. 1. It will have 2 in the future no doubt.
Since the other day, I have been able to notice that the error message says, "high speed device plugged into a non-high speed port". This makes me assume that the ports are indeed 2.0, but need something else for "high speed".
Is there some type of high speed usb 2.0 controller that he would need to get? Or is the best possible option getting a pci usb 2.0 add-on card?
Please answer my question fully.

I don't have specifics laying in front of me. I helped him pick out the parts about two months ago and he had put it together a little after. I won't be seeing him for 6 more days, but I could send him an email or something.
Could you just make a suggestion to me? I am scrapping for answers and just need suggestions because I don't want anybody angry at me.
I would like to just know a general way in which this problem is fixed so that when I see him next before his next job that I can help him quickly and let him be on his way.

Make sure the chipset drivers for the mobo are installed AND install SP2.

thanks EzyStvy, is there any other more desperate measures that could be taken in case that doesn't work, or would SP2 definitely solve the problem as long as the motherboard has usb 2.0 compatible slots?
If the motherboard definitely has 2.0 usb, and the computer recognizes it as non-high speed, is there any way to MAKE it high speed?

Getting the proper drivers should make it high speed.

thanks, again though, since I do not know the specific drivers that are needed, is there a website that I could get the drivers from. I really would like to meet up with my friend and show him how tech savvy I am after solving his problem

Check the mobo install/drivers disk and/or the website.
I recently installed a mobo, and the automated driver installation off the disk did not install the USB 2.0 drivers from some reason. It included all other drivers in the automated install, but the USB required its own, non-automatic, install. This was an ASUS board.
You can't do your homework without the appropriate data.

Most of the motherboards I have come across did not come with USB2 drivers they relied on the native drivers within XP SP2.
