Hey guys,

Just bought and received a SAMSUNG 941BW [LINK] (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001088) from NewEgg and upon booting, during an all black screen, I was greeted to a bright red pixel a few inches off center. Watched a bit of film, typed away and been on the net, it's most noticeable on darker images where it shows up bright red and quite visible, otherwise it's fairly difficult to detect. So I have a dead pixel right?

NewEgg's return on dead pixels is 8 or more, otherwise they'll ship it right back to you, Samsung's for my size is 10, so as far as I can tell I can't just get an RMA.

Have a few questions about this, if you wouldn't mind:

#1. From my brief description I have what is known as a 'dead pixel' correct? I know there's various terminology regarding 'pixel issues' but what I'm talking about with mine would appear to be a...?

#2. Are there some color panel tests I can run, like a slide show or diagnostics, to test the rest of the screen for defects, other dead pixels, LCD issues, etc.? I ran MS Paint through a few colors but there must be some pre-packaged setup with some intelligence behind it that suit better then my guesswork.

#3. How do I know if it's just one pixel or a small tight grouping of several?

#4. At all fixable on my end? What would the manufacturer do, scrap the whole thing basically? I can recall having read something about being able to 'massage' LCD's with certain types of issues, I don't think what I'm talking about is the same though, can someone elaborate?

#5. Chance of re-selling this anywhere? I'd return this right away if I could, the single bright red dot that I've encountered so far does stand out when I watch films, and I like to do that a few nights a week so it does pose an issue for me, other then that it doesn't often show up, so someone who doesn't use it the same and wouldn't mind could be getting a perfectly working LCD otherwise, ideas?

#6. I bought this hoping to capitalize off a $40 MIR that will expire by the end of this month (Jan) if it doesn't get in the mail before hand, a missing UPC bar on the box shouldn't pose an issue if I try to resell to a home user I wouldn't think, no? As I am hoping to resell this at or near what I paid so I may get another of the same, other then this issue I'd say it's a great monitor, can you guys think of this posing an issue to a buyer? The 3 year Samsung warranty should be valid without it as far as I understand.

That's all I've come across since the weekend I've had it, answers to these and anything applicable would be highly welcomed.
/Thanks.

I'd call Newegg or go to their Live Chat- which I've used many times to great satisfaction. Sometimes they will go further than their stated warranty for their customers. It's worth a try.

Well I called them in the first place to get the dead pixel policy, tried to keep the guy on the phone for awhile asking random questions hoping something useful might slip, didn't sound like it was something they would budge on, considering he specifically mentioned that if I do send in a LCD with less then 8 pixels gone awry they would send it back to me.

You say trying their live net chat might grant different results?
/Thanks.

There's a Newegg support rep registered on this site. You can try PMing him - he might be able to pull a string or two.

I would not try to get exceptions to a clearly stated policy.

Well, I have that very monitor and I, too have a dead pixel (I think that's what it is), and it really isn't that big of a deal - you cannot notice it during normal use at all.

Newegg clearly says they will not compensate you unless you have 8 or more dead pixels - dead pixels are a fact of life when it comes to LCD monitors.

Does it really bother you that much?

Dead pixels are a fact of life, but nobody wants to spend $200-$300 or more on an LCD that has a busted pixel staring at them from day one.

It's like buying a brand new couch and finding out after it's delivered that there's a huge tear or stain on one of the cushions.

I sent you a PM.

That's not what I meant. If they clearly told you, then that route is a dead end.

I definitely agree with you, and if I could have returned my monitor for a new one I would have, but as solid as a company Newegg is they will stand behind their policies.

Luckily, mine is microscopic in size and in a random area towards the corner.

The reason policies are so strict on dead pixels is because dead pixels suck a huge amount of money from manufacturers. A rather large percentage of LCD panels manufactured are rejected because they have too many dead pixels. It's not cheap. With millions of individual transistors in each panel it is nearly impossible to have a 100% success rate. I got lucky with my $230 20" Westinghouse and I don't have a single dead pixel.

Albeit, this one had more than one dead pixel (less than 8, though)

Saw this on Resellerratings.com

Dear temp4insquote,

Thank you for taking the time to post your informative review. We greatly apologize for any inconvenience caused by your experience, and we thank you for your patience and understanding.

Our policy guidelines are similar to most in the industry, as well as the manufacturer. Newegg doesn't get any special treatment when it comes to returning items to vendors, so we also are not allowed to return any item with less than 8-dead pixels; however, we are always willing to make exceptions for our customers, and we should have done the same for you here. We have issued you an RMA, and we will be happy to replace the defective item for you.

If you should need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Jason at 800-390-1119 (dial 25078 immediately).

Best regards,
