View Full Version : Possible internet prob

I tried the increasing cache trick but I think my troubles lie elsewhere. After a certain number of pages viewed I get a 1 to 2 minute delay in the next page loading. I don't have this problem when downloading a large file(D2 stress test was 98.5 megs) it will do that non-stop. When monitoring the data in-out using the connection window it shows no data is sent at all during the time in question, I can be loking at page after page( with a delay in there to read some stuff) and suddenly nothing. It just stops responding for a span, it sends out no data at all, then after a time it just starts up again until the next "burp". I don't know if this is hardware related as I have changed the MB and CPU since this started and it didn't help. I thought it was software at first so I did a fresh re-install of Win98 and that didn't sem to do it either, any ideas???

Your modem is retraining. That is renegotiating a connect to your ISP at a lower or higher speed dependant on phone line quality. There is virtually nothing you can do about it.
It's just possible your ISP is busy, and every time a few other people try to sign on, it "hangs" for a bit, until they get connected. This comes from too many users sharing the modem pool, and/or too slow/outdated servers.
Either way, the best you could do is find a different ISP (try some of the free ones), and see if the problem persists.

Thanks Jim, my wifes system doesn't seem to have this problem, it's on the same line and has had the same brand/model modem in it. That's what made me think it was other than hardware. Do you have a string for speed limitation? it's an E-tech modem with a Rockwell chipset. I can run some more tests to see if I can isolate it.
We have one of those E-Techs in one of our boxes. As winmodems go, it's not too bad, but it *does* connect too fast quite frequently and a limiter string would help a lot. It likes to connect at 52K and it chokes big time - the right speed for us is 49333.

This is an older E-tech, a PC56RX. The thing is it wasn't always like this, I thought I noticed the trouble after installing one of the IE5 updates some time back. I have had the same problem with a Boca tidalwave in the same system. My wifes has a Boca, but not the problem.
reboot

Go to the extra settings box, and put in S202=32S95=1 and try it again.
If that doesn't help, try +MS=K56,0
Let us know.

Here's a little more info I forgot about(gee, I'm starting to sound like a novice poster) While having this "lag" I can hit the send/recv button in e-mail and it works fine, but not with page browsing, that waits for 1.5-2 minutes then works fine. I tried the first string and it seemed ok initially, but then I hit the bump again.

I have been havung the same problem for about 2 months. Dial up sucks!

OK, it's now a registry/DUN problem, not a modem or driver problem.
Get iSpeed from my modems page, and start playing with the settings.
Before you do that though, read this (http://www.maximumpcmag.com/reprint/archive22.html), and this. (http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/modem/)

Hmmm, I guess that's my point, I know it doesn't seem external, more like a software problem of some sort. It seems to me I first noticed it after an IE5 update. It's almost like something in the software delays transmission of data for a pre-set amount of time after a set number of pages have been viewed. I was just wondering if anyone had seen or heard of such a thing or had similar experience. Is there any particular place in the registry I could look to determine if my theory is correct? We are supposed to be getting DSL next month so I'll see if the trouble continues with that.
I've seen this in Netscape, but not in IE.
I'm a Netscape user, and frequently Netscape does this, and after killing the Netscape window I still have Netscape lurking in the background, and only an "end task" will completely kill it so I can restart it.
Might check the same thing for IE, it's possible I suppose...
One other thing, does it happen to be a USR modem? I've seen this and solved it if so.

I too have this same problem. It stops (IE 5.01) and Outlook works wonderful. I even been having many freezes latelty with no changes done on my part (W98se+). I have iSpeed, but could that be the problem? Now that I think about it, I just did install and have iSpeed calculate the settings. Could this be the problem reboot? Maybe there is a combatiblty problem with win modems (Conexant MDP3880-W).

Non-System brain or brain error!!
Replace and strike any key when ready.
Joe - the 3880 winmodem can have a *lot* to do with *any* connectivity problems. Are you saving your pennies for a Supra Express?

No USR Xayd, it's a Rockwell chipset, and IE5.
