A friend emailed me this message today:
"When I tried to log on to the Internet all I got was a busy signal for 2 days at ***. (I thought they were having problems.) I called *** Saturday and told one of the techs that all I got was a busy signal
every time I tried to log on. He had me go into something to check some numbers. I'm not sure exactly what it was. It was in the My Computer file. He told me (after changing some of the numbers and it still was not connecting to ECR) that it was the modem and to bring it in to be fixed."

Does this sound right to you? Can a modem suddenly give only busy signels? Can a modem be fixed?

call the number from a regular phone - is it busy?

If the modem works well enough to pick up the line and determine that it's (supposedly) busy, then the modem is working just fine.
It's more likely a dialler (dial-up-networking) problem, than anything else.
Go to Add/Remove programs, Windows tab, and remove DUN. Restart the computer.
Go to Start > Run > and type in inetwiz and create a new connection. Be sure to edit the Advanced properties to put in the correct DNS numbers and such.
Next, go to the properties of your new connection, and disable all protocalls except TCP/IP, and UNcheck "Log on to network".
Try connecting.
If you get any error msgs, post them back here, and we'll get your friend on the net.

Who needs a life?, I have internet!
