I want to buy the smallest laptop in every dimension for under $300.

All I want out of it is the ability to run linux and wifi don't care if it sucks I'll use an antenna anyways it has to have a tolerable speed to do both though. The purpose of this laptop will be to get used to linux and unix os and just to surf the net, NO MORE!

Used or refurb I do not care, the key here is SMALL.

THANKS

Maybe someone can find cheaper, but here's a refurb IBM p2 thinkpad.

$250 + $19 shipping.

Can you install linux on a laptop without an optical drive?

I've been thinking of getting a laptop with one because this would lower the price and the size.

Thanks

You probably could, but that's going to limit you severely. You should be able to find a reasonably sized used laptop in that price range - my IBM T20 is less than 5 pounds and has a 13.something inch screen and a DVD drive. A few years ago, Twinhead had a under 4 pound laptop with a 12 inch screen and a DVD drive - with a 1 GHz Celeron and an internal 802.11b Prism adapter - you may be able to find one of those kicking around somewhere, the model is N2380 I believe.
