USB Malfunction

I had my 4GB USB flash drive plugged into the first front USB panel and then I plugged in an internal 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax hard drive with a USB to IDE cable.

The hard drive was recognized and set to G:\, I navigated to G:\ and it just stopped at the My Computer screen with the busy cursor. It seen it as a 114 or 111 GB with 104 GB free.

I unplugged the hard drive and started sorting some files. I went to get a program off the USB 4GB flash drive and noticed it wasn't in the My Computer. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. It said it was an unknown device with the message (screen shot) above.

I restarted my computer, not plugging the hard drive back in, I tried getting the flash drive working. I keep getting this message, though.


Device Manager shows Unknown Device. I try updating the drivers for it but it doesn't find any that will work with it.


Can anyone help?

Try reinstalling the USB controller chip. Go into Device Manager, right click the USB controller and hit 'Uninstall', then reboot.

It still says it's not recognized.

Could my Mass Storage drivers be corrupted or something?

I put the XP cd in and tried to find the drivers on that but it didn't find anything.

It's a junky ECS M863. The USB used to work until I put in the hard drive in conjunction with the flash drive.

I also got a Diagnostic Code from PowerMax so Seagate is going to warranty the hard drive. ;)

The USB still isn't working. I have a G5 and a Logitech 350 headset, both working and USB.. I think I lost the Mass Storage drivers or something.

Clutching at straws here but if you plugged the Maxtor into the second front USB port and you say it went faulty it probably blew your 4gig at the same time.
I dont quite see how but maybe it caused a voltage spike or a data scramble at exactly the wrong moment.
What is your machine sitting on? a desk or carpet?

I didn't say I blew my 4GB.

The Maxtor was already crap. It died about 7 months ago. I got a diagnostic code and getting a RMA from Seagate because it still has warranty.

Nothing is wrong with the 4GB, it works fine on my other computers. It's my USB or mass storage drivers or something.

Sorry for the delay in my response, we are in the middle of moving. I probably won't get to reply until monday or tuesday. I'd still like to get some suggestions on how to fix this problem.
