Advice on new build

I'm using my original home made that you guys helped me with a few years ago. It's an Asus P4S8X mobo, with Pentium 4 2.4 ghz. I plan on replacing everything except for the Lian Li case. I want to run Vista soon. What mobo, processor, and memory should I go with. I use my computer for web surfing, and word processing. Kids do school work. Not big gamer. Don't want to spend crazy.

I was thinking of Pentium D processor, with another Asus board. I loved the first one. Never had one single problem with my first build, only software issues. Give some advise.

Look at the Core 2 Duo processors, they are way better than the Pentium D line. What kind of budget are you considering?

I'm looking at 700-900 USD. I also am keeping my PSU. Antek 450.

Which model Antec is the PSU? Reason for asking is the older PSUs won't work on the new motherboards thta use a 24 pin AND a 4 pin power connection from the PSU.

Core 2 Duo E6300 on an Asus P5B board with Corsair Value Select DDR2-667 ram, dual channel kit, 2gb for Vista if that doesn't bust your budget. XClio 450BL power supply to get the ATX 2.0 compatibility. If any gaming is anticipated, a 7600GS or 7600GT video card. Seagate SATA hard drive - 250gb 7200.10 is a great deal, someone's SATA optical drive, might as well do a DVD burner.

GLC, I value your knowledge, and advice. You helped me big time the last time...Why C2D as apposed to the Pentium D? I planned on the Asus video card with the 7600GS, and the Seagate you chose also. I like the Lite-ons for their value.

Despite the frequency, the Core 2 Duos are way faster than the Pentium Ds, so I'd skip them. Stick to a Core 2 Duo if your budget allows.

Pentium-D is old tech. C2D is far superior in all respects except possibly cost the way they are dumping them now to get rid of them. If you can fit a E6600 into the budget, that will REALLY scream.
