Fix (install new) CD-Rom at home...?

My CD-Rom is broken (won't burn cds, rarely can even read them), and I brought it into Best Buy where I bought the laptop (Gateway) and the guy said I"d have to send in the computer to get it replaced and that would take at least 3 weeks. Do I have the option to install a new CD-Rom by myself at home? Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks a bunch

You probably can - some laptops have quick release drives, then all you have to do is get another one and slap it in. Others can be more involved. Either way, an exact replacement drive is not going to be cheap.
