I have a Toshiba Satellite U205 S5002, Windows XP pro. I use this notebook to tune pianos. The fan noise is causing problems. Is there a way to calibrate and/or control the fan noise. Shutting the fan off during brief periods to sample the piano is one option I would like to explore. as well as improving the general noise volume. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

I know that there are fan-control programs for Dell laptops, but I don't know of one specifically for Toshibas. You can check out SpeedFan though:

I wouldn't even touch the fan speed - it speeds up when it needs to cool the processor down. The processor is already passively cooled for the most part, so I would let the fan do its job.

If you monitor the temperatures at the same time to make sure the laptop doesn't get too hot, it shouldn't hurt to turn off the fan for brief periods.

You might be able to underclock the processor. My old PIII compaq allowed me to do it via the power properties tab.

Other than that, try to limit the load on the pc as much as possible. If using XP, use classic appearance, set the display settings to high performance instead of high quality, and use a very simple desktop background. My PIII crashed when the CPU worked to hard, so this is what I found works to slow it down a bit. The less you jog and the more you walk, the less you sweat.
