I just bought a laptop which was an "open box" item; everything in the box looked OK, all bits & pieces were there and it was under $400 (Cdn) - so I bought it. I still have time to return it, but I'd like to see if I can fix it first or decide if I want to spend time/money sending it in for warranty service. I don't really need it, so it's no loss to return it.

Some of the specs:
Computer: Acer Aspire 3630 Series Notebook
CPU: Celeron M 380
RAM: 512MB DDR
HDD: Hitachi 60GB
OS: WinXP Home SP2
Optical: Philips DL DVD+/-RW

Any ideas or possible solutions?
If a full restore didn't fix it, the drive is bad. Return it or get it repaired on warranty. That's a good laptop for that kind of money. Thanks glc, I was afraid of that.
