System Restore With Xp And Vista

If you install VISTA on a seperate partition or hard drive and have it cohabitating with XP: What happens when and if you utilize SYSTEM RESTORE? On either?

It should restore the OS that you are working with. Why would it be any different?

It's a very good question .. unfortunately I cannot think of a scenario where it should really be a problem... it does appear that the SR Filter driver keeps separate logs of FS calls and there shouldnt be any "contamination" even though they use the same folder as the Data Store.

However, it boils down to best practices, doesnt it? Not just for XP and Vista .. but for any OS' it's just disastrous to share system partitions. For example, I dont install any OS onto the same system partition, and I always turn off system restore for the other OS' partition. For example, if I've got XP on /dev/hda1 and Vista on /dev/hda2 .. then from XP the system restore on /dev/hda2 is turned off... and when booting to Vista the system restore on /dev/hda1 is off.
I usually take it a step further. I usually have a separate partition for my programs as well.. and those are turned off as well. There shouldnt be a scenario where it should need to be accessible.

Vista does seem to take it a step further .. my system partition for XP is unmountable by default on Vista... at least I am reasonably sure (I might have done it manually, but maybe someone else will see if s/he saw the same)

Just covering the bases. I would think that it would be as GLC said; if the systems were on seperate drives. I was thinking that there may be a priority matter if both systems shared the same hard drive and one or the other began reading thru it, during a SYSTEM RESTORE. Thanx.

There may be a problem with system restore,as the 2 OS's use different formats,so when you boot with one,it looks at the restore point,assumes it's corrupt and deletes it,the same appears to happen with either OS,so dual boot is possible,but system restore feature may be nullified.

This being a new frontier in the PC World, input from users with these features has been in limited supply. Hopefully, as things progress, we will receive more precise information from those with the encounterred experience. I purchased a copy of VISTA to install on another high speed system that I am assembling, just to find out what it was all about. I haven't used it because I am debating on whether to install it there, or stick it on my other 250 in here. In either scenario, I won't be using the same hard drive. I would also like to know more. It could be the creation of another two headed monster.
