I am getting ready to upgrade to Vista. I have over 10,000 mp3s on my hard drive and want to know the best way to back them up. I am doing a clean install of vista and would like to know my options. If the best way is to save all my files onto dvds or cds as mp3s, i need to know the steps to do this. If this is not the best option, please give input. I have Nero 7, and am willing to get any program to help me. I am clueless and need help!
THANKS,

Best way and most conventional way is to save them on a disc. (DVD or several CDs).
Just put in the disc and goto Nero 7 and select all the files and click burn.
Another way is to save your files on a external hard drive, if you have one.
How many gigabytes of stuff are we talking here?

roughly 70 or 80 gigabytes
I'd save them to an external hard drive, or a secondary storage drive on your PC. Going through the process of burning 15-20 DVD's is going to take a llllloooonnnngggg time. It would be much quicker to go the other route. JMO.

For that amount of data, I'd be getting an external hard drive. The bonus over DVDs for backing up a music collection that large, is that you can make additions and changes as times goes on.
I personally have a Western Digital 'MyBook', and like it very much. However, you can get more flexibility by purchasing a hard drive, and a housing separately.
I'm sure GLC will point you in the direction of the Apricorn housing he recommends :)

Yes, with that much you need an external hard drive. Good idea to have one anyway for backups. WD's are the best deal going for premades, but I use Apricorn housings and drop standard drives into them.

i have an extra 120gb hard drive. can i buy something that can hold this and hook up the computer via usb 2.0 and make the internal hd and external hd?
You bet - is it a IDE or SATA?

thanks a lot. i have a hp media center with a slot on the front of the tower for an extra "media" drive. is there any way to get an enclosure that will also plug into this slot? or do i have to by a whole hp hard drive for this space?
That's for a flash memory card reader to the best of my knowledge.

Actually some HP models have slots for what they call "media drives" in the front. Kind of a consumer version of a hot swappable server drive. As far as I know you have to get them from HP.
