"A denial-of-service attack is a bit like fourteen fat men trying to get into an elevator - nothing can move,"

Why is it that the IP addresses that are being used to do the attacking cannot be blocked? I know nothing about it but perhaps someone can explain? There must be some sort of intelligent software that can recognize a denial of service attack and automatically block those IP addresses...right?

If it were just a couple of IP addresses to be blocked it wouldn't be all that big a problem. In this case there were multiple machines, most of which originated from SK that were doing the attacking. Those addresses probably were blocked it just takes a bit of time to identify them. No real hiccups on the net yesterday either.
