Hangup at password

I have a PC running Windows XP with SP1. Recently, it lost my password and I can't get into the system at all. I called my local guru and was told that I"d have to reformat my C drive in order to fix the problem. Is there any way to get to the password and fix it without losing all my files on the C drive?:confused:

Unfortunately, though a web forum, we cannot determine if you are somebody who is sincere in needing to get back into his or her PC or if it is somebody trying to gain access for malicious purposes... therefore, discussion of getting past passwords are not allowed on these forums.
