It would seem that Liteon optical drives are very highly recommended here on the Mech for their combination of quality and low price. My question is does that extend to their slimline notebook optical drives as well and is there a specific model that I should consider. I am looking for an "omni" format drive. Dell wants $109 for a DVD-rw for my Inspiron 2600 laptop and i'd rather see that $50 in my pocket instead of their's. TIA.

One of the reviews on Newegg says it worked in an Insperon 8200. Your laptop would have to have the quick release type of drive and not a built in.

It appears to be a standard Samsung slimline cd-rom drive so it most likely not proprietary. There is a small bracket that screws onto the back of the drive and the tab ends up in the memory door area where it gets another screw to hold it in place. I will just have to put that bracket on the new drive. What I need to know now is if the Lite On drives are as good as their big brothers are.
