I'm on cable right now, and had quite a few problems with ppl getting on my comp and messing around with stuff, so it was recommended i pick up Zone Alarm.. it seemed to be working alright, but ppl were still getting on, main problem is that even though the lock was not on, it basically totally shut down internet access all the time, so i just got fed up and uninstalled it, and everything is working fine.. even have less problems with my comp.. go figure!
Anyone else run into anything similar, or know of any other firewalls that would work? (preferably d/l)

I have a cable modem at my job in which I installed zone alarm on and it works fine. But, I only think it prevents outside web sites and hackers from accessing the computer, not people within where the computer is. Is that what you were saying or did I misread your question? Were those same ones changing the security settings on the program?

ya, i was talking about hackers, but a lot of the time it basically completely locks out the net all together, not letting any websites load or anything.

Hi Dr Szaeus,
I've had Zone Alarm for 3 months and have not had any problems. When I first installed and used it there were repeated requests from the program to permit my various programs to access the net. Once they were all set up and authorized through ZA it has worked quietly in the bkgrnd ever since.

ZA known bug: If you click the little diagonal arrow to shrink the ZA control panel BEFORE you minimize to the taskbar, the errors go away.
Working on a fix in the next release.
If you're on @home (you are in Duncan, I'm in Kelowna, same thing) you really NEED ZA.
Check out www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) for lots more on internet security.

Well, I personally use Zone Alarm and haven't had any trouble with it, but if you want the Cadillac of personal software firewalls, go get Black ICE Defender.
Should run about 30-40 bucks at any software shop, demos are available if you wanna try it out.
From my tinkering with it, Black ICE is about the most user friendly and easy to setup software firewall out there.

I had major problems with BID. First, it had all kinds of issues with my USB network adapter. If I had to shut down for any reason, I would have to reboot 3 or 4 times before BID would work AND I would be on the network at the same time. I also had problems with it appearing to be running, but if I checked things out at www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) , I wasn't protected. ZoneAlarm has only caused a problem for me once. It was a known bug in one of the versions that has since been fixed. Best part, it's free for personal use. It has to be the best free piece of software that I have ever used (excluding Linux of course, but I'm still playing there).

I use to use Black Ice Defender but the alarm always go off, it was quite annoying, so I switched to Zone Alarm. I like it a lot.
