Hi all

My mom is looking to buy a laptop for work. She will be doing mainly word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and stuff like that. She wants it fast and I immediately thought core 2 duo. What would be the best way to go? I figured I would head over to HP's or Dell's website and customize one. Any ideas?

Thank you.

My friend has a Toshiba Qosmio G20. It's a beauty but it might be a bit much. I'm currently using a Sony VAIO VGN-BX Series laptop which isn't very spectacular but i've had no big issues with it so far... no firey Sony batteries either. ;)

Any ideas on size that she would be more comfortable with? I really like Dell laptops.

For basic needs probably the Inspiron E1505. The base configuration is a 1,7Ghz C2D and a gig of ram. That will probobly be more then enough power for those needs. Just pick out however big of a hard drive you think she might need.

If something smaller and easier to carry around might work better, look at the Latitude D420. Not as powerful, but again, would work fine for office apps and it's only 3 lbs and a 12" screen.

My current laptop is an HP, but that was a special deal. The price was ideal at the time and it was exactly the power I needed. My one gripe is that I spent almost 3 days pulling crapware off of it, and I never did get everything. I really like my Windows clean and free of other componies branded garbage, but I'm a little careful of just blasting a boxed copy of windows onto a laptop at the same time because of driver issues. Fine for a personal system, but not a great idea for a school or work system.

A Dell E1505 if you are trying to keep the price way down, otherwise you *cannot* beat a Thinkpad for a business laptop - look at the T60 series.
