i have a old thinkpad 760xl running win98, when i try to turn it on it goes into scandisk and then at around 45 pct it shuts off. ran some diagn. on it and memory says - dev 002 err 21 fru 0020
everything else checks out fine. except memory. if i try loading or using a boot disk do you think this will take care of my problem. tks

Does sound like memory problem. Should check to see if the memory sticks are still in their slots. If they are, pull them out and try a reboot.(I think that there is memory on the motherboard)
Instructions to get to the memory: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=PFAN-3TJKLN
You have bad ram. Hopefully it's not the base non-removable memory that's bad, that would require a motherboard replacement. At least modules are dirt cheap.
http://www.memoryx.net/thinkpad760xl.html
IBM Thinkpad 760XL Memory
Maximum Memory 104MB
Memory Slots 2 (one for 32MB maximum and one for 64MB maximum)
non-removable base memory 16MB
Although it is physically possible to install more memory, the system will only recognize 104MB maximum. When installing a 64MB module, half of the non-removable memory will be disabled. There ia a toggle switch near the memory sockets. Switch it to the left in order to recognize a 64mb module. Install that module in the right hand socket.
16MB IBM Thinkpad 144-pin 60ns EDO SODIMM (p/n 92G7341) $9.98
32MB IBM Thinkpad EDO SODIMM (p/n 92G7342) $14.98
64MB IBM Thinkpad 144-pin EDO SODIMM (p/n 76H0268) $19.98

i just ordered a 64mb module, when it comes and i install it and it still does the same thing then more than likely it's the non removable module then?????? like you said then that's bad, i don't want to spend too much money on this thing. what more or less do you think it can cost me.
p.s.
after messing around with it, i removed the modules it has and inserted them back now when i run the test on the memory it comes out okay. but i still get the scandisk and shutoff after
45 pct.
getting
What does it presently have for modules?

the one on the right is a 16mb, the other i could not tell. is there a possibility that the battery is causing this problem.

the modules in my thinkpad are 16mb and 32mb. i installed the 64mb that i got yesterday and then ran a system test and everything comes out fine. then i try to boot up the system and i still get the same problem.
it starts then goes into scandisk and after 45pct turns off. also just in case when i try to turn it back on it gives me two beeps. from what i understand sometimes the no. of beeps indict what problem your having. i am trying to get my hands on windows 98 to see if installing it from scratch would help. but if anyone can point me in a different direction to try to get this thing up i would appreciate it. thanks
Did you follow the directions for installing a 64mb module? Did you try it with the other slot occupied and with it empty?

yes followed instructions and tried both ways, i believe it is just a matter of it staying on. ran full test and everything comes out okay. i was able to get to dos mode but the damn thing just won't stay on. any ideas on why the thinkpad would just shut off after about 20 seconds???
