Hello there.

I am in the process of replacing the palm rest on a HP laptop. During the removal of the heat sink assemply, the processor (939) was pulled out of the ZIF socket by the thermal paste. I have several bend pins that I'm in the process of straightening, but was wondering if this would have damaged anything else?

Has anybody else had this happen?

Thanks!

I have a terribly stupid question.

I am working on a HP Pavilion zv6000. This unit has two fans on it. Are the fans supposed to draw air from beneath the laptop and exhaust it on the sides or is it visa versa?

Thanks!

On the fans, I am not sure. On the CPU question, you could have damaged the socket, but more likely if anything is damaged it is the CPU.

Well after a few hours of staring through a magnifying glass and using a mechanical pencil and credit cards to straighten out pins .... I'm good to go.

I was just very surprised that the CPU would be so cemented to the heatsink.

Another disaster avoided.

This is actually a standard thing with Socket 754 and Socket 939 chips (and I would assume AM2 as well, but I haven't touched one of those systems yet). I've gotten in the habit of wiggling the heatsink laterally before I take it off to prevent the CPU coming out with the heatsink.
