sharing a modem connection

my wife's church has two new pc's running xp. they are connected wirelessly and share files and printers fairly well. the secretary's pc has a modem and she gets out to the net just fine.

i've tried to set their system up so that when my wife tried to get to the net, that will cause the phone to be dialed on the secretary's pc. no luck so far.

the secretary's pc is set to have her netowrk be *shared* but that seems to not work.

can this be done? what steps should i follow?

according to the geek squad, this is not possible.

I'm pretty sure you can share a dial-up connection using ICS. The speed will be less than desirable if both are accessing the internet, but follow THIS (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/dialup/sharingdup.htm) link for the lengthy steps.

I don't know that getting the client computer to dial out using the host computer's hardware is possible, but I'm not sure.

What you want is possible, but the machine with the modem must be your DHCP server, not the wireless router. If you want wireless in the mix, you need to set the wireless router to just be an access point. If you set the host computer to dial when necessary, it should dial when the other computer makes an internet request.

both are xp's.

thanks for your suggestions; they make sense (although i need some direction in setting the server pc to do the dhcp.)

For what it costs in comparison to dialup, why don't you just get a basic AT&T DSL account over there and use their 2Wire wireless modem/router? I know the issues you have been having in your home and your church, but it's still the best most cost effective alternative and it won't be a pain in the neck like dialup.

my wife's church pays $4400/month (down from $5400/month since her parsonage was sold) for a new wing. that is why my wife is half time. anything that costs $ is a major consideration in her church. the two computers that are new were donated.

so, dsl cost $50/month for a business account. her church has 50 in worship.

so, anything that can be done to trim $ is welcome *except* trimming money for mission which we hope will only increase.

so, that's why they are trying to work it out with dialup.

but, of course, you are right that a dsl would be a great way to go. my church has that and it works great ... even ac`ross the parking lot to the parsonage ... with the garage door up!

I think you can get a basic for a lot less than 50 bucks a month. Looks to me like plans start at $21.99 a month, that should be 768k/128k, all you need. Dialup costs that much.

perhaps; i'll ask her to check out the prices.

the dialup is free due to a previous secretary having arrangements to got the church free dialup with a company that also offers them totally free web services. so, 0$.

My first thought was, "I wonder if that type of service wouldn't be provided to a church..." Maybe they'll do the same for your DSL. Can't hurt to ask!
