I currently have my computer running with XP Pro w/SP2 that I purchased about a year ago. I was recently going through a friends new computer that has Vista Home Premium and like a lot of the things in it.
My questions are: if I purchase and install a Vista Upgrade on my current computer, will I legally be able to install my XP Pro on a back up home build system?
And if so, would Home Premium or a different version be recommended? I'm basically an internet browser/emailer/perhaps future video edit type of guy.
OR wait until Vista comes out with SP1 before doing anything.
Thanks in advance all.

As long as you own that copy of XP, and it's fully licensed, you can use it on another PC. Go to MICROSOFT and download the VISTA UPGRADE ADVISOR. It will tell you if you are going to need to perform any modifications, and will also recommend which VISTA will work now.

I recommend you do a clean install. You can do this with an upgrade license, the procedures are all over the net. You may reuse your XP on another machine as long as it's a real XP and not a manufacturer's restore disk.

Yes, it's a fully legal and original full version of the XP software. And excuse the dumb question GLC, but what do you mean specifically, when you say a clean install?

Clean as in reformat and start with a blank hard drive.

Well, the reason I was going to do the upgrade, besides price, was to keep a lot of the programs and files that I have on this unit already. Is there a good way of doing that?
And chuck4456, I'll check the Upgrade Advisor also.

If you want to do that, you can only use Business or Ultimate to upgrade from XP Pro. Home Basic or Home Premium requires a clean install.
