new build

This will be my first solo build and i would like to hear any suggestions or problems with it.
i don't have a specific budget but i prefer staying below 1000$ as i will be using this computer mainly for school.
ps. these prices r in canadian dollars and im getting the parts from a store close to where i live.

processor: intel core 2 duo E6300 1.86ghz 232$

motherboard: asus p5b-vm 159.99$

2GB kingston pc5400 189.98$

seagate 250g hard drive 16 mo 92.99$

Dvd rw lg 39.99$

which adds up to about 714.95

Is there any problem with using my old case and 400w power supply? I also already have a new monitor, speakers, mouse and key board and will be sticking with the onboard video card since i dont really play games on my pc.

any comments would be appreciated

If the old power supply is a quality brand with a 24 pin main ATX connector, it should be fine. If it's only a 20 pin, don't try. The rest of it looks fine - but verify the ram is compatible.

Was your old case a byopc job, or was it bought? If you made it, then you know the form factor. Otherwise, check to make sure that the microATX will fit. Also, if you can, pull the brand and model #s off the PSU just to make sure it is quality. With a great rig like that, the last thing you want to do if get the whole thing fried from an over exerted power supply.

That's like rebuilding an engine and using the old timing belt. Get a new POWER SUPPLY.

Not necessarily true - what if the old one is 24 pin and from a quality manufacturer?

A micro ATX board will fit in any ATX case.

50-50 on that one. When in doubt.......... tell us exactly which POWER SUPPLY you have. Let's be on the safe side.

btw my old case was a byopc but most of the work was done by a friend who is much more knowledgable than i am
