the highschool im goin to has wifi and all that good stuff so i figured i'd build a laptop cause i cant afford to buy one from a brand name company. any good sites for the parts and instructions? thankya much

I have always heard that you cant really build a lap top cheaper than buying one, but I will follow this thread and see if someone chimes in with a better answer.

By the time you buy the barebones kit and all the components, you have spent more than you would for the same thing already built with a warranty. Laptops start at $500 or so these days.

I have to reiterate what's already been said sadly. Laptop builders are still a niche group and you pay a premium to do it. A basic Dell, Averitech, or Toshiba is still cheaper. If you want to do your own reading, there is a pretty good group over at www.notebookforums.com.

I agree that perhaps buying a Dell or another name brand laptop would be your best bet.

If your school has a computer lab, you might want to use it for your daytime computing needs.
If you must get a laptop, you might want to be somewhat cheap with it - in high schools valuable and unsecured gadgets tend to grow legs and walk away.
