Capturing footage in games

I have been 'googling' about for a good free program with very simple editing tools (cutting scenes, basically) that I can use to capture footage from some games. I could experiment with the various offerings out there, but figured that someone here would have enough experience with them that it could be a one-stop-shop kind of deal. Suggestions?
