OEM drives

I'm about to undertake my first build.

AMD X2 3800
Asus M2N-E
1GB Corsair
eVGA 7600GT
FSB 500W PSU

I just realized that I ordered an OEM HD, floppy, and DVD drive. Is there anything I need to know regarding the stuff that OEM parts do not come with? Do I need to buy anything?

OEM is fine, it us usually a bit cheaper than retail but most often has a thirty day warrenty for defects. heres a bit more info on OEM products.


To put an OEM product in the simplest terms, it is a product from a manufacturer that is sold without the retail packaging to system integrators and retailers for purchase in or with a completed computer system.

Retail is simply the same product in which you would purchase from a store in its original package.

Since price is such a huge factor in the purchase of product by consumers, OEM products offer a major advantage over a retail product. The reduced items and packaging can drastically reduce the cost of a computer component over a retail version.

The biggest difference between a retail and OEM product is how warranties are handled. Most retail products come with very well defined terms for service and support in case the product has any problems. OEM products on the other hand will generally have shorter warranties and limited support. The reason is that the OEM product is supposed to be sold as part of a package via a retailer. Therefore, all service and support for the component in the system should be handled by the retailer if sold in a complete system.

As a user who is building a computer system or upgrading a computer system, the retail version may also be important. If you are unfamiliar with what is required to install the component into the computer system, the manufacturer instructions can be very useful as are any cables that you may not have.

OEM drives are not subject to the 30 day warranty - Seagates, for instance, have a 5 year warranty regardless of retail / OEM. The only thing OEM drives lack over their retail counterparts are screws and cables - both of which come with your case and motherboard respectively.

Yeah I knew that. And my buddy's hookin me up w/ Nero and what not.

The OEM dvd drive will probably come with software,at least mine did(Samsung)

Some do, some don't, Alfie. If the Newegg pictures don't show a CD, then you have to assume it doesn't unless the specs or reviews say otherwise.

IT CAME!!!!!!!!! I'm about to go home and build it now. I'm at work just staring at the clock, convulsing. BTW the MOBO did come with all of the necessary cords. One more quick question:

I have an Ausus M2N-E with DDR2 800 Corsair RAM. The list of "qualified" RAM in the MOBO manual did not list Corsair. Is this OK? I guess I'll find out. Why would they not list one of the largest manufacturers of quality RAM?
