I need to transfer like, 10-20 Gb per week from the desktop to a laptop. I am cuurently doing it with NIC[ LAN Card], but are there faster way to upload the files? USB2/ firewire, are they faster?

Are you currently using wireless or are both machines hard wired to the LAN? Wired may be a little faster since wireless typically is encrypted (assuming you are using a router and it has wireless encryption enabled).

This might be a good reason to look into gigabit ethernet. A lot of newer laptops have it, and if not you could get a PC Card NIC. That would speed things up. You would have to put a new NIC in your desktop if it doesn't have 10/100/1000 LAN already, and a new router or switch.
If you don't want to do that, an external firewire hard drive would be better then what you're doing now.
Firewire can do about 1gb a minute.
I can move a gigabyte between 2 computers in about 30 seconds on my gigabit network. Your mileage may vary.

cool
since there is no GB networkcard in either desk or the lap and there is firewire on the laptop, so I guess I will install a firewire card on the desktop....and way I go.
thanx guys.
