Any specific comments? Here is a link to the Wiki entry for this OS:

I am considering a new telephone. My primary objective is getting a Polish to English language translator which I have with me at all times. Since the phone never leaves my side, and I am into the " immersion " method for learning Polish (then the easier Slavic languages after that), I want something with me 24/7.

All the language converters I have seen thus far which are integrated into a cell phone seem to have the " big 5 ", but of course none of the Slavic languages. They offer Spanish, English, French, German, and Italian, mainly to US and European audience.

So my goal is getting English to Polish and Polish to English. Symbian seems a decent possibility. How widely available are the applications for Symbian in this quarter of 2007? I am guessing the most likely candidate for releasing software for this type of need of mine will be the translation software packages I am using or have seen. It might be a simple add on for them. There are plenty of language converters out there, but most of them are priced well above the price of a cell phone. The biggest negative with a dedicated language converter is that I literally would not have it when I need it. If it is integrated into the cell phone it would be with me at all times, no exceptions (well, one or two, but we are not going to talk about that here...)

I have seen Symbian in a decent number of Nokia phones thus far, so I am guessing they are pretty serious about promoting it since they own almost 50 percent of it.

I just Googled for Polish English Symbian and got a lot of promising hits. Looks like it depends what exact version of Symbian is in the phone.

Thanks GLC. I have done a fair bit of research since posting this two days ago, part of it based on your response, and it seems I am back in the same position I have been in the states: how smart a phone do I want to pay for, exactly?

I think it will be best for me to learn more about what my Palm T/X can do for me before switching cell phones. I don't carry it as much as the cell phone, but maybe as my daily life changes here to more normal a life instead of a travel base, the Palm might end up spending enough time with me to avoid purchasing yet another electronic device.

I saw some Palm solutions too.

If you do end up wanting to replace the Palm, a Treo or a Windows Mobile smartphone would also be a possibility.

Yes, that makes sense. I just bought the Palm T/X, however, having purchased it in the USA before my trip to E. Europe began. It was tough to find a smartphone in the USA retail shops which I could unlock AND purchase without a long term contract.

How long are you gonna be in Poland?

I have no idea. She is 6-0" tall, as shapely as any Eastern European female I have seen in years, energetic and lively, speaks excellent English, and we are already planning side trips to Budapest, Prague, Kazakstan, Berlin, and Moscow.

See my dilemma?
