Hey all,
My name's Robert and I'm a college student. This is my first PC build, and I am having some issues.
I have a few friends that build PC's, though none are terribly experienced, and they're confused too.
I cannot get the thing to even turn on! I read the "having problems with a new build" sticky, and did exactly what it said, as well as the following:
I tried another power cord (monitor) and a new outlet. Nothing.
I triple checked the voltage on the PS. its at 115V.
I triple checked the mobo to make sure it had no contact with the case. It didn't.
I pulled everything and tried booting with just the CPU and ram.
I rechecked the ram and its in there as best it can be.
I put the ram in the other two slots just in case.
I pulled the CPU to check all the pins on the socket (its a 775) and they are all fine.
I reinstalled the CPU with the stock heatsink afterwards the same way I did before. It was installed in the right orientation, etc.
I pulled the board out of the case and tried booting it on my desk. Nothing.
The ATX and CPU power connectors are both firmly in the board.
I grounded the power switch, and hooked up the pwr button and pushed it.
I searched the forums for other ideas.
I tried the troubleshooting on Asus's website.
I reset removed the battery and reset CMOS as per Asus's instructions.
I've asked all my friends.
I've prayed.
Nothing. Pulling and reinstalling the CPU was the last step since it was the biggest PITA.
Specs:
Asus P5B-E
Intel E6600, w/ stock fan for now
Corsair XMS2 - 2x1GB DDR2-800
$50 Case and ATX PS by Jpac.
I am not sure if there is anything it could be other than a faulty component. As it stands right now, the mobo is sitting on my wood desk with the ATX, 4 pin, CPU, and ram as the only things installed/connected. I switch the pwr supply on and the green LED lights up, but when I ground the pwr on pins, I get nothing.
I suspect the PS first since it was cheap, and I'll have a friends high-end ATX PS to borrow soon enough in a few days. Until then, is there anything else I can try? What should I do if his PS doesn't start it? Is there a way to test the either the CPU or mobo?
Also, the mobo is a P5B-E, and the pwr LED is on. Could it still be the PS, or does the fact that that light is on mean the PS is working?
